This Reuters wire published yesterday is based on official country-by-country plant data available here. The document is compliled from reports submitted by EU member states to the European Commission according to the 2001 Large Combustion Plant Directive. A 1-page graphical summary of the data is here.
Knowing in detail where and when highly polluting installations will close down is important for assessing the impacts on security of power supplies and on pollution levels, and for assessing how quickly CCS power plants could or should be deployed.
A few EU member states now want to keep these dirtiest plants open beyond the dates on which they had previously agreed to close them. This and other topics will be dicussed by EU environment ministers in Brussels on 2 March.Author : markjohnston
